Tour Leader: George Boling & Christopher Salfai
Tour Dates: January 27 - February 06, 2006
In January of 2006, a group of eighteen people from Wisconsin, led by Dr. George Boling and Dr. Christopher Salfai, optometrists, joined Moisés Guillén and Mirna Angulo for an Eyeglasses Mission in northern Nicaragua. The first three days were spent in Ocotal working in a very spacious facility provided by the Catholic Church, and 1,218 people were examined. On February 02, a very interesting and bumpy trip was made to San Jose de Cusmapa over very primitive roads. Shop was set up in a learning center run by the Padre Fabretto Foundation and 254 eyeglasses recipients were seen. The final day was spent in Estelí at the Gotita de Amor Pre-School, and with the help of Petrona Galeano, W/NP, Lions International, and the local firefighters, the group saw 295 people.
Overall, it was a very successful trip that witnessed 1,767 examinations performed. The group also found time for the usual shopping and the opportunity to take a canopy ride over the Tiscapa Lagoon in Managua.
