In cooperation with the coffee growers of Nicaragua, Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc. is selling fair-trade coffee. For those unfamiliar with fair-trade coffee, it is that which is guaranteed to be grown in Nicaragua while W/NP's importer/distributor has:
- paid a set minimum price to cover the costs of production;
- made advanced payments or extended credit to producers to help avoid debt while financing the next year's production;
- agreed to longer-term trading relationships that provide producers with added security to plan for the future;
- promoted sustainable coffee production practices.
Nicaraguan fair-trade coffee ensures that W/NP's importer/distributor is purchasing beans from democratically-organized groups of small, Nicaraguan farmers.
You can order a one-pound bag of coffee for only $10 ($1 shipping). Of this amount, $4 goes to Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc. for ongoing programs with the rural farmers in Nicaragua. Current programs are providing drinking water to farming families and working with rural women to teach family health and nutrition as well as building skills in leadership and democracy.
If you don't drink coffee, Nicaraguan fair-trade coffee makes an excellent gift for coffee drinking friends. They'll appreciate the thought and effort you've taken to give them the best drinking coffee available, for life is too short to drink cheap coffee.
By buying Nicaraguan fair-trade coffee, not only are you financially supporting the independent, coffee farmers of Nicaragua, but you are also ensuring that W/NP can continue to provide assistance to rural families in Nicaragua.
