AGRICULTURE/NATURAL RESOURCES
W/NP has a longstanding history of collaborative agriculture and community development projects throughout Nicaragua. Currently, the major focus is the Farmer to Farmer project, which involves working with our parent organization, Partners of the Americas, Inc., and the U.S. Agency for International Development. The goal is to improve economic opportunities in rural areas of Nicaragua by recruiting skilled agriculturalists and institutions, using their knowledge and experience to benefit the producers in farm organizations belonging to our southern neighbors. There has been an increased demand for experienced volunteers that focuses not only on production, but also on planning, processing, and commercialization. While the FTF program has always promoted environmental sustainability, the local leaders have requested increased efforts to promote improved environmental protection and agricultural techniques that ensure long-term sustainability.

Each FTF project begins with a dialogue between the FTF coordinator, farmers, farm organizations, and agro-industry in Nicaragua. Next, the Wisconsin FTF project leaders provide technical recommendations and locate agricultural professionals and practitioners with the expertise required to carry out the project in Nicaragua. Collaborating Nicaraguan organizations provide support for the Wisconsin volunteers. Wisconsin volunteers are farmers, university faculty and staff, dairy producers, UW Extension agents, and agribusiness consultants.
