Greetings, friends of Nicaragua,

I'm writing to you to invite your long-term involvement in a new project to promote sustained poultry production at a family level in Nicaragua. The project is called "Gallinas de Patio" and will be administered by Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc., which has already raised the initial funds to provide small flocks of chickens to families in several communities in Nicaragua.

Our goals are the same: to help small families to successfully manage a flock of chickens. This project is good for the greater economy as well as individual families. It is also a very practical, hands-on way to help educate children and their families about business management, agriculture, biology, scientific experimentation, and marketing.

I am the volunteer who will visit Nicaragua to help introduce these small flocks to about forty different families and educate them about managing the flocks. This program will also encourage accurate record keeping of management practices and egg production. We will encourage and help facilitate innovation and experimentation.

We anticipate great success for this project because W/NP has been working in Nicaragua for many years and has established working relationships with people in over seventy communities. Many of these strong friendships are with women, and typically, women care for the chickens. I want to ensure that these families have access to helpful poultry management resources and education after I return home.

I would like to invite you and your organization to take advantage of the strong connections we have already established with many Nicaraguans and to develop a working relationship through W/NP. I would like to share contact information with W/NP staff so that you could offer advice on egg production and marketing and also exchange ideas and services.

Let us know if you would be willing to serve as a resource for our egg producers and can shed light on other ideas about ways we can work together. Finally, I welcome any information on poultry books, journals, and other useful resources that may be available to Nicaragua.

Thank you very much.
