The following is a message received by James Belling, Appleton, from Marvin Cardenas, Chinandega, on May 20, 2003.

Hello Jim,

We started unpacking last Saturday. So far we have gone through only eight boxes, but early this morning, we made the first delivery to the Materno-Infantil Hospital (OB/GYN and Pediatric). We had a photo taken for the newspaper article.

Yesterday afternoon, we were interviewed by the local cable TV News. I gave a brief description of our joint venture, mentioning Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc., Appleton Rotary, Learning Centers Coordinator Leonor Guerrero, the Compañeros organization and of course, my very dear friend Jim Belling.

Later, the directors of both hospitals arrived to look around. We could see how impressed they were by the magnitude of this shipment. Personally, I have even helped transport some of the Gaylords in my truck, which is a piece of junk, but I am glad to help in any way that I can.

We are accomplishing a little each day. Our two doctors, Dr. Morles and Dr. Carrion, who are both Rotarians, and I check each Gaylord and divide everything in half. If they see a special supply or piece of equipment, the one who needs it most gets it. Items for small children or babies are given to the Materno-Infantil Hospital.

Sometimes these guys get excited and almost fight for things, but we are all good friends and work together. It is so strange watching them get so excited, with hands shaking from emotion and sweat pouring off of them as they work. It is still so very hot here.

I am making a video recording for you and all the wonderful friends who gave of their time to help. This is a great job we are doing and is very overwhelming for me. It is too much to digest at one time. I keep asking everyone to make sure that this is really happening and that I am not dreaming.

Jim, I will stay in touch.

Love,
Marv

The following is a "thank you" message received by James Belling, Appleton, from Dr. Alejandro Paguaga, Chinandega, in regard to the shipment to Nicaragua.

Dear Mr. Jim Belling,

The Director General of the Hospital of Chinandega extends its sincere gratitude to you and to all of the members of your organization for its valuable and important donation received in our Center Asistencial, which benefits the population of Chinandega with scarce economical resources. You have the full assurance that everything received will be given adequate use since the Department of Accounting did all of the documentation for its proper income and refuge.

We hope that you will continue your help in the future and that you will continue with your noble work in favor of the health of the population of our department.

I want to thank you for your kind gesture, and I hope you will not discontinue your work!

Dr. Alejandro Paguaga
Director General of Hopsital Espana Chinandega
